Beginner anglers often mistakenly believe that any telescopic tackle with guides automatically becomes a “Bolognese rod.” In reality, Bolognese tackle is a highly specialized tool with its own design features. Unlike a pole rod, where the fishing line is attached to the tip of the blank, this type uses a reel, which significantly changes both the fishing distance and the way the rig is controlled.
The main design feature is a telescopic structure supplemented with line guides and a fixed reel seat. The key difference from an ordinary budget telescopic rod lies in the height of the guides. In a classic Bolognese rod, high-legged guides prevent wet line from sticking to the surface of the blank. The main environment for this tackle is rivers with moderate or medium current. It is in these conditions that the potential of a long blank and a spinning reel is fully revealed. Trotting requires constant line control from the angler so that the float moves steadily and the bait stays near the bottom layer, where bream, roach, or crucian carp feed.
On large rivers and canals, where the promising edge is located 15-20 meters from the bank, an ordinary pole rod is not enough, while a feeder may be too heavy-handed. In such cases, a Bolognese rod becomes the intermediate and most effective option. It allows you to cast over shoreline vegetation and control line tension above the water, minimizing the influence of wind on the line arc.
Although the main focus is on current, using a Bolognese rod on still waters is also justified in certain scenarios. For example, when fishing at a depth greater than the length of a standard float rod, or when a very long cast with a light rig is required.
The fishing distance with a Bolognese rod ranges from 10 to 40 meters. With the right reel and a well-balanced rig, an angler can cover large areas without moving from one spot. This makes the tackle ideal for finding an active school of fish on an unfamiliar body of water.
How to Choose a Bolognese Rod
Choosing this type of tackle requires a systematic approach, since there is no universal solution for all types of rivers. Before studying the technical characteristics of the blank, it is worth determining the typical conditions in which the rod will be used.

Rods 7-8 meters long and longer are chosen by professionals for deep canals or very wide stretches of water.
The rod test indicates the weight range of the rig. Light models with a test of up to 10-15 grams are suitable for delicate roach fishing in weak current. A medium test of up to 20-25 grams is considered the most versatile. A heavy test of over 30 grams is needed on powerful river currents, where heavy floats and significant loading are required.
The rod action determines how the blank bends. Medium-Fast action is the most popular because it provides enough stiffness for accurate striking at a distance while also absorbing fish runs well. Fast action is preferred for fishing in strong current, where an immediate tackle response to a bite is important.
The blank material directly affects comfort. Modern carbon fiber makes the rod lightweight, which is critical during many hours of hand-held fishing. If the budget is limited, composite can be considered - it is heavier but more resistant to mechanical impacts. Fiberglass is rarely used in Bolognese fishing due to its high weight.
