A kukan is a device used to hold the caught fish in the water — typically a cord or cable with a loop or spike at the end. It allows the fish to remain alive and fresh while fishing continues or during transit. A kukan is especially useful when fishing from shore or boat where a landing net may not be practical.
When selecting a kukan, pay attention to the material of the cable or cord — metal, braided or synthetic will be more durable under load and wear. The length should match conditions: for shore fishing 1-2 m may suffice, while from a boat you might need a longer one to keep the fish clear of the hull. Also consider the number of attachment points or hooks — more points allow securing multiple fish or better distribute the load.
One common mistake is piercing the fish under the gills or gill cover, which can lead to injury — it’s better to thread the loop through the lower jaw or diagonally under the mouth plate. Another issue is dragging the fish behind a boat or over a long distance — this increases stress and risk of damage. In hot weather store the kukan deeper or in shaded water so the fish does not overheat.
A kukan is especially useful when fishing from a boat and you are landing multiple fish at once or need to keep the catch alive while continuing to fish. It frees your hands and removes the need for a landing net or holding fish. It’s also handy for spearfishing or fishing in hot weather — the fish stays in the water and experiences less stress.
After fishing rinse the kukan with fresh water, especially if used in salt or muddy water, and thoroughly dry it before storing. Store it without twisted cable or cord, and regularly inspect clips, hooks or knots for corrosion. A little maintenance and cleanliness will help prevent wear and avoid losing fish next time.
