Boilies are specialized, highly nutritious hookbaits made from dough and heat-treated (hence the name "boil"). They are the primary bait for targeted carp fishing and other large non-predatory fish (such as grass carp).
There are three main types: Sinking — they lie on the bottom; Floating (Pop-Ups) — they float up, lifting the hook off the bottom; and Wafters — they have neutral buoyancy, barely lifting the weight of the hook.
The diameter (e.g., 8 mm, 12 mm, 16 mm) is selected based on the size of the target fish and bite activity. Smaller boilies (up to 12 mm) are suitable for fast-paced fishing and cold water. Larger ones (15–20 mm) are used to filter out small fish and target trophy specimens.
Pop-Up boilies provide visual attraction by lifting the bait off the lakebed. They are ideal for fishing on silty or weedy bottoms, preventing the hook from getting buried in mud or grass.
