A life jacket is designed to keep a person on the water in a safe position (face up), even if they are unconscious. A buoyancy aid is lighter, more compact, and does not restrict movement. It is intended for people who can swim and need support on the water until help arrives or they return to the boat on their own.
The main criterion is your weight and chest circumference. Each model has weight-based labeling (for example, 70–90 kg or 90+ kg). It is important that the vest fits snugly to the body, does not “jump up” to the ears when you squat, but also does not compress the chest during breathing.
The most popular option is multilayer foamed polyethylene (PPE) or EVA. These are lightweight materials that do not absorb moisture, are durable, and retain buoyancy even in the event of mechanical damage to the outer fabric of the vest.
After use (especially in salt water), the vest should be rinsed with fresh water and dried in the shade. Avoid direct sunlight and heaters - high temperature can damage the structure of the filler. Store it hanging in a dry place.
The filler itself lasts for years, however, over time the fabric and straps may wear out due to ultraviolet exposure and mechanical stress. It is recommended to check the integrity of the seams, fastex buckles (fasteners), and the overall condition of the material before the start of each season.
