The main criterion is the person’s weight for which the buoyancy of the filler is designed. The marking is usually indicated in kilograms (for example, 70–90 kg). It is important that the vest fits snugly to the body: fasten all the fastex buckles and tighten the straps - if, when pulling at the shoulders, the vest shifts above the ears, you need a smaller size.
The crotch strap is a critically important safety element. It prevents a person from “slipping out” of the vest when falling into the water or when being lifted by the shoulder straps onto the boat. This is especially relevant for children’s models and when using the vest in stormy weather.
After use in salt water, the vest must be rinsed with fresh water. Washing in a washing machine is prohibited, as this may damage the structure of the filler. It is enough to wipe the surface with a sponge and soapy solution and dry it in a hanging position away from direct sunlight and heaters.
The service life depends on the condition of the filler (usually foamed polyethylene or EVA). Over time, the material loses its ability to retain air. If the vest has become visibly thinner, the filler is crumbling, or the outer fabric has significant damage, such a product requires immediate replacement.
A life jacket has a high level of buoyancy and a special collar that keeps a person’s head above the water face up, even if they are unconscious. A buoyancy aid is lighter, thinner, and does not restrict movement, but it is intended for people who can swim and are able to stay afloat on their own until help arrives.
