A balancer is an artificial lure used mainly in winter fishing, characterized by its wide horizontal figure-eight motion. This action covers a large area beneath the hole and helps attract even inactive predators. Unlike vertical spoons, a balancer has broader and more expressive movement. It is particularly effective when fish are suspended in the water column and respond to smooth lateral motions.
Light and compact balancers are suitable for shallow water or weak current, as they maintain stable action even with minimal movement. For deeper areas or strong currents, heavier models are necessary to keep the lure in the strike zone. The size should match the target species — small lures for perch, larger ones for pike or zander. Body shape is also important because it determines how wide and active the lure’s motion will be.
A common technique involves lifting the balancer with a smooth upward motion followed by a pause, during which the lure creates a wide horizontal glide. When fish are inactive, the motion should be softer with longer pauses. Active predators, on the other hand, may respond better to more frequent and sharper lifts. Adjusting the rhythm and amplitude helps match the fish’s mood and activity level.
In clear water, natural colours that resemble small fish tend to perform best. In murky water, bright and contrasting colours become more effective because they remain visible at greater distance. During winter, glow-in-the-dark and fluorescent details work well due to low light under the ice. Predator behaviour also matters — sometimes subtle colours are preferred, sometimes bold, attention-grabbing tones work better.
Balancers can cover a wide area under the hole, which is essential when fish activity is low. Their horizontal action can provoke predators even when they remain nearly motionless. In cold weather the lure must maintain stable action with minimal rod movement. Anglers should also consider ice thickness, depth, and the need for a more delicate presentation.
